Weigh In

Here a member of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department weights a bat that was caught in one of the mist nets.  The bat is weighed by being placed in a bag which is then hung off a special, low weight, scale.  The scale can weigh objects between 1/10th of an ounce and 1 pound.  After being weighed the bat was banded, check to see if it was a male or female, and then it was released.

While this Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department researcher is handling this bat with his bare hands, you never should.  He has been trained in how to properly handle wild animals and has received proper vaccinations.  People who are not trained in how to handle bats, or other wild animals, should never touch a wild animal even if it seems fine.  At no time during the bat surveys were any of the untrained volunteers allowed to touch the bats.
