Show Us Your Teeth

After being removed from its holding bag, this little brown bat does its best to try and scare us away.  Squeaking as loudly as it can and baring its teeth it tries to show how mean it can be.  Even thought its teeth are very sharp its mouth is so small it can’t bite the researcher.

While this Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department researcher is handling this bat with her bare hands, you never should.  She has been trained in how to properly handle wild animals and has received proper vaccinations.  People who are not trained in how to handle bats, or other wild animals, should never touch a wild animal even if it seems fine.  At no time during the bat surveys were any of the untrained volunteers allowed to touch the bats.
