Exclusion In Action
Memorial Hall
Essex Center, Vermont
After the installation of the bat house structure at Memorial Hall in Essex Center,
Vermont, it was necessary to perform an exclusion to prevent bats from getting back into
the Hall. Before performing the exclusion a team from Chiroptera Cabin Company spent two
nights observing bats as they left the building at dusk. This observation period help them
come up with a plan on how best to proceed with the exclusion. The Team choose two egress
locations that would be netted. The netting would allow the bats to leave at dusk but
would prevent them from reentering the next dawn. The other egress locations would be
plugged with insulation. After doing the exclusion the Team watched the Hall for a few
more nights. When no more bats were observed exiting the Hall the remaining egress
locations were plugged and the netting was removed. The bats were safety relocated to
their new bat house home just a few yards away.
