Banding a Wing

A member of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department checks the condition of a little brown bat’s wing.  This bat was caught and banded during the Shelburne Farms survey.  The small band has a number engraved on it that will allow researchers to check the health and lifespan of this particular bat over a number of years (provided they ever catch it again during a future survey).

While this Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department researcher is handling this bat with her bare hands, you never should.  She has been trained in how to properly handle wild animals and has received proper vaccinations.  People who are not trained in how to handle bats, or other wild animals, should never touch a wild animal even if it seems fine.  At no time during the bat surveys were any of the untrained volunteers allowed to touch the bats.
