The Largest Bat House In
Vermont This was a monumental undertaking, but the Chiroptera Cabin Company Team was up to the challenge. After seeing a program about bats and Chiroptera Cabin Company on a local public television program, the ground manager of Shelburne Farms called for help with their bats. Shelburne Farms was created in 1886 by William Seward and Lila Vanderbilt Webb to be a model agricultural estate. The estate has 4 main building, the Farm Barn, the Breeding Barn, the Coach Barn and the Shelburne House. While the Shelburne House was originally used by the Webbs as a summer home, it is now maintained as a fabulous inn and restaurant. As you can imagine the house and the barns were not bat proof when originally constructed and now house a huge number of bats. The decision was made to create a custom designed house specifically for the main lawn outside the Shelburne House. This house would be viewed by thousands of people throughout the summer and fall, and needed to accommodate a potentially huge number of bats. The final product was a bat house that can house more than 2,500 bats!
Shelburne Farms Installation Raising this custom designed house involved a great deal of work. The house itself weighed approximately 80 pounds and was mounted on the end of two 16 foot poles. Preparation and planning were key to effectively raising this house. Click on the image to see a larger picture
