Bat Surveys in Vermont
Every few years dedicated groups of people, led
by members of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, venture out into the
Vermont wilderness to conduct bat surveys. The
surveys consist of identifying possible bat flight paths, catching bats,
collecting vital information on the bats’ health, banding the bats for future
research, and releasing the bats back into the wild.
This is the story of bat surveys that Chiroptera Cabin Company
participated in during June of 2005. While
people are welcome to come to help and learn, all bat catching and handing is
done strictly by professionals that have been vaccinated against disease and
trained in how to properly handle wild animals.
The safety of the researchers and the tiny mammals is paramount.
While these surveys allowed researchers to collect data on the local bat
population the hope was to catch and identify an Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis) to prove that their roosting grounds have extended
